![]() In working with the Ford Motor Company, the State of Illinois, General Electric, and a joint effort between Pepsi and UNICEF, Walt’s team of designers came up with revolutionary attractions: Magic Skyway, Great Moments with Mr. In order to test out the Disneyland model on an East Coast audience, Walt focused his Imagineers’ attention on creating new attractions for the 1964-1965 New York World’s Fair. Different sites were proposed, but his team kept coming to the same place: Central Florida. Not on the original park, even with its flaws, but with a new enterprise with enough land for all of his dreams to come true… away from the intrusive externalities of the outside world. ![]() He immediately became upset with the disruption of the thematic environment and desired some sort of underground system where all the “magic” could happen behind-the-scenes. A famous story from the era says that Walt once saw a Cast Member dressed as a cowboy walking through Tomorrowland to his post in Frontierland. Within a year of the park’s commercial success, a multitude of restaurants, motels, and inexpensive entertainment offerings sprung up around the park in what Walt frustratingly called “a cheap Las Vegas.” There was little room, both externally and internally. But Walt was frustrated with the park’s surroundings. The original Magic Kingdom had a sense of uniqueness and charm that was believed to be so special and different that it could never leave its sunny valley in Southern California. ![]() Disneyland was initially perceived to be incapable to replicate.
